YPSILANTI TWP. (WWJ) – Two people are in custody after a man seen with a gun near a Washtenaw County school accidentally shot himself while running from police.

A 20-year-old man who was wearing a ski mask and armed with a gun was seen Monday morning in the area of McGregor Avenue and Grove Street, near Rawsonville Elementary School in Ypsilanti Township.

When deputies responding to the scene approached the masked man and one other person in the area, they both began to run, according to police.

The 20-year-old tried to pull out a gun, but accidentally shot himself in the abdomen, officials said.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition was not disclosed.

Authorities have not released any information about the other person who was taken into custody.

While the incident does not appear to be related to the school, officials have not released any further details in the case.
