ALPENA, Mich. (WWJ) -- An Alpena-area man faces up to life in prison if he's convicted as charged in the overdose deaths of two men, after authorities allege that he provided the lethal drugs.

Gavin Daniel Krueger of Ossineke — an unincorporated community in Alpena County, Michigan — was arrested in Florida in July and arraigned in the 88th District Court in Alpena County on Thursday on two counts of Delivery of Controlled Substance Causing Death.

According to the Michigan State Police Seventh District, the investigation began back on March 18 when troopers responded to an Alpena Township home on a report of two unresponsive men.

EMS, already on the scene, believed that the men had died of a drug overdose.

According to the police report, troopers found a razor blade and a rolled up $5 bill containing white powder in front of a chair where one victim was sitting.

MSP also found cellophane wrappers, small black packaging and a silver metallic container with white powder on a desk in front of the other victim. Cell phones and computers were also seized with a search warrant, along with other "drug paraphernalia" in the home.

An autopsy determined that both men died from multiple drug intoxication; more specifically, fentanyl and mitragynine, officials said.

Further investigation led to the identification of Krueger as a suspect, his home was searched, and an arrest warrant was issued on July 5.

On July 23, Krueger was arrested by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in Vero Beach, Florida. On August 10, he was transported from Florida by the MSP 7th District Fugitive Team and lodged in the Alpena County Jail.

Krueger's next scheduled court appearance is set for August 28.
