DETROIT (WWJ) -- A man who was wanted in connection with multiple violent crimes is in the hospital, after he was shot by police officers in Detroit.

According to Detroit Police First Asst. Chief Charles Fitzgerald, officers were tracking the man who was suspected in a string of recent shootings, for a total of ten.

"Officers were in the area, in the Tenth Precinct, conducting surveillance on an individual wanted on numerous shootings," Fitzgerald told reporters at a press briefing. "One is an actual nonfatal shooting, and the other nine incidents — nine incidents in the past ten days that occurred — (involved) shooting at houses and cars."

On Friday, officers found the alleged gunman at a home on the city's west side, but he fled in a vehicle.

Fitzgerald said the suspect made it to the area of Livernois and Fullerton, where he jumped out of his car, and carjacked another vehicle.

Three agents from the ATF fired shots at him, but he took off once again.

Michigan State Police troopers were finally able to stop the suspect at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Second Avenue near the Cass Corridor, using a PIT maneuver.

Fitzgerald said the suspect, finding himself trapped, got out of the car with a gun in his hand.

That's when Detroit Police officers confronted and shot him.

The wounded suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. His name was not immediately released, with expected charges pending.

MSP will be handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
