ROMULUS (WWJ) — A man is in the hospital after being hit by a car on the freeway in Wayne County Sunday night.

Michigan State Police officials say a Kia and a Ford were involved in a crash shortly after 8 p.m. on May 11 on northbound I-275 on the ramp to westbound I-94.

Two drivers had gotten out of their cars following that crash, according to MSP. A short time later a 48-year-old Van Buren Township woman driving a Mazda cut through the “gore” between I-94 and the ramp to I-275.

She rear-ended the Kia, pushing it into the Ford, causing the Ford to then hit the man, according to MSP.

The man was taken to the hospital, but authorities say he is expected to be okay. The other two drivers were uninjured.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw says this incident should serve as a reminder to drivers to stay in their cars following a crash on the freeway with their seatbelts on.

“Fortunately, they were in pretty good shape when they were transported to the hospital,” Shaw said of the driver who was hit. “So it wasn’t a fatality, but it surely could have been. Because any time you’re struck by a vehicle, our bodies just aren’t made to handle that.”

He told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Taylor Dietz your car is the safest place to be after a crash.

“I don’t think people realize the speed of freeway traffic unless, 1 — you’re working for us, or 2 — you’ve been out there one time changing a tire on the side of the road and you’ll probably never want to do that again,” Shaw said. “We just want to continue to remind drivers if you’re involved in a crash, stay in your vehicle. If you want to drive up to the next exit ramp and get off and then call 911, that’s fine too. We don’t need you to stay where the crash happened.”

He noted the cars involved in the initial crash were illegally parked in the gore and the third driver illegally cut across it. It was not immediately clear if the driver of the Mazda will face any charges.
