DETROIT (WWJ) -- Mary Sheffield is Detroit's new mayor.

Sheffield, who has served on City Council since 2013 and as Detroit City Council President since 2022, won with 78.2% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.

Sheffield was the youngest person elected to the council at the age of 26.

Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr, pastor of Triumph Church, was the other mayoral candidate.

Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Judge Greg Mathis and former Detroit City Council President Saunteel Jenkins were among those who endorsed Sheffield.

Duggan announced he would not seek reelection. He is running as an independent candidate in the 2026 gubernatorial election.

Sheffield ran on a platform that pledges to build on the work being done to revitalize Detroit. Addressing gun violence in the city, making it easier for entrepreneurs to launch and grow their businesses and more support for families and youth are among her plans for her first 100 days in office.
