DETROIT (WWJ) - Residents of Alden Towers and neighboring Indian Village Manor on Detroit's east side were quickly evacuated after a raging fire broke out near the top of the apartment building Thursday morning.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the scene off Jefferson Ave. near Van Dyke where emergency response vehicles and displaced residents lined the street.
"It's a very chaotic situation," Langton said.
Jefferson Ave. has been closed as authorities work the scene. Residents told Langton that the fire broke out in a unit on the sixth floor sometime on Thursday morning near the top of Alden Towers.
Roughly 300 people living in that building along with the neighboring apartment tower, Indian Village Manor, were all evacuated.
Local resident Stephanie Davis told WWJ she lives in one of the four buildings in the same area as the affected complex -- her apartment was forced to evacuate.
She said people appeared tired as they emerged from their homes and some had soot on their faces from the fire.
"I'm thinking, 'my goodness, what kind of fire was this?'" Davis said. "But I'm told it was pretty bad and that likely about two units were damaged."
Langton said two residents were taken to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation.
It is currently unclear what time the fire broke out, but the Detroit Fire Department seems to have extinguished the blaze, Langton reported.
"I don't see any flames at the moment here, so it looks like Detroit Fire department has this under control," Langton said.
Fire officials remain on scene as they investigate the cause of the fire. No other details have been made public.
