DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man pleaded no contest to three charges stemming from an incident where he was accused of driving erratically with his son in the car.
Otez Coil, 31, entered the plea on charges of fleeing from a police officer in the second degree, a 10-year felony, fourth degree child abuse- a 1-year misdemeanor and operating while intoxicated, a 93-day misdemeanor. The felony charge is coupled with a habitual offender, third offense notice. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said that doubles the charge to a 20-year felony.
On Dec. 16, 2025, Warren Police officers saw a Jeep Cherokee driving erratically and at excessive speeds on southbound Van Dyke. A previous press release from the Prosecutor’s Office said Coil reached speeds around 80 miles per hour after officers attempted to pull him over.
He crashed the car into the guardrail when he tried to turn onto 11 Mile. He was holding his 9-year-old when officers approached and took him into custody.
The child was uninjured.
“As I have repeatedly stated, fleeing from law enforcement is extremely dangerous, to the public and to the police attempting to enforce the law,” Lucido said. “We have seen so many incidents of innocent individuals killed by drivers fleeing from police. This case is additionally troubling because the defendant’s child was in the vehicle. We are grateful that the child was not injured.”
A charge of driving with a suspended license will be dismissed when he’s sentenced as part of the plea, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
Coil’s sentencing is scheduled for May 13.
