(WWJ) -- Some of this year’s snow plows will have an artsy addition.

MDOT announced that two plows from the Bay Region and one from the North Region will feature blades designed by students.

Heritage High School and Bay City Boys and Girls Club created the plows for the Bay Region and Bear Lake High School designed the North Region’s plow.

Officials said the initiative promotes safe driving and raising awareness for operators of snowplows. Each year has a different theme.

This year focused on the message “Give plows space; it’s not a race.” The theme reenforces giving plows plenty of room to work safely and to slow down while driving.

“It’s great that the students are helping us get the word out on the importance of giving us room to work,” MDOT Transportation Maintenance Worker Adam Westendorf said. “I think it’s good that they’re involved with getting these important safety messages out in a fun way.”

MDOT has activated their snowplow tracker. Residents can track the plows in their area by name. Names, which were submitted by the public, include Snowba Fett, Dr. Plow Good and Ford Field Flurry Flighter.

Paint the Plow applications and theme for the 2026-2027 season opens at the beginning of March 2026. Applications won’t be accepted if they don’t include a draft of the design and commitment from the school to complete the project before the winter season. All Michigan middle and high schools, as well as educational organizations, can submit applications.

MDOT delivers a plow, approximately 12 feet long and 4 feet high, to a secure location at the school at no cost. No painting supplies or materials or financial assistance are supplied by MDOT. They said reaching out to local booster clubs or social organizations for additional support is allowed.
