BATH TWP (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police arrested two men late Wednesday night in connection with a 2018 cold case involving the murder a hunter in Bath Township.
Thomas Olson of Grand Blanc Twp and Robert Rodway of Saint Johns were apprehended by MSP's Fugitive Team and charged with murder and felony firearm for the alleged slaying of Chong Yang in a state park near Lansing.
68-year-old Yang -- a frequent hunter -- was in Rose Lake State Park in Bath Twp on November 16, 2018. When Yang did not return home, his wife grew worried, and relatives offered to go look for him.
The impromptu search party found Yang's car in the Rose Lake parking lot and followed two sets of footprints to the victim's body.
Police were called to the scene. Yang was lying face down and appeared to have been shot in the head.
According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, the Bath Twp Police Department worked with the FBI and other local agencies to gather evidence, establish a timeline and locate the suspects.
Witness testimony and a plastic bag with hunting spray that was recovered near the scene led police to Olson and Rodway.
Authorities allege that the pair killed Yang while hunting, then stole his headlamp, knife, backpack and shotgun.
Both men were arraigned Thursday and have been denied bond.
"Chong Yang’s family deserves justice," Nessel said, "and we are working hard to make sure they receive it.”
Olson and Rodway are due back in court for a probable cause conference on January 5 and a preliminary hearing the following week.
