Dreaming of a 'White Christmas' in Metro Detroit? 'I would not plan on it,' meteorologist says
(WWJ) – We're a little less than two weeks out from Christmas and forecasters the prospects of a white Christmas in Metro Detroit aren't looking too great.
With the area sitting at six degrees above average so far for the month of December, Metro Detroit hasn't seen any snow since the end of November. While we did see some rain, AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson says "it looks very dry."
"A big area of high pressure is overhead now and that's gonna keep us dry through at least Friday," Thompson told WWJ's Tony Ortiz on this week's Weather Wednesday segment.
Thompson did note we could see a few hundredths of an inch of rain late Saturday night into Sunday. But once that precipitation departs the area, Thompson says it looks like high pressure will again build in the area, meaning more dry weather.
As for the holiday forecast, Thompson said "the chance looks really slim at this point" that we'll have snow for Christmas.
"As I said, there really won't be much precipitation to work with between now and Christmas. There just is not a lot of cold air to work with," he said. "At this point it looks like temperatures next week will largely be in the 40s. There's just not a lot of cold air, so when we do get precipitation, it's gonna be marginal whether it's rain or snow."
"I just don't see enough chance for precipitation to give us any decent chance at a white Christmas. We'll keep an eye on it, things can always change, but I would not plan on it at this point," Thompson added.
