Veterans Day has a history dating back more than a century,-- since President Woodrow Wilson, in 1919, declared November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Armistice Day marked the end of fighting in World War I when an armistice (or a "temporary cessation of hostilities") between Allied Nations and Germany happened on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of eleventh month. It was declared a federal holiday in 1938. In 1954, Congress passed legislation replacing the word "Armistice" with "Veterans." The legislation deemed November 11th a day to honor 'American veterans of all wars'.
