LANSING, Mich. (WWJ) -- A metro-Detroit gas station is being told to pay up after raising prices to nearly $1 higher than other area stations last month.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office announced Thursday the owner of a BP Gas Station -- located on Ann Arbor Road, just east of I-275 in Plymouth -- has agreed to pay a $2,000 fine after they were caught gouging prices.

The gas station is owned by PGH Associates, LLC.

It all unfolded on May 18, when WXYZ in Detroit ran a story detailing the station's lofty prices -- $3.899 per gallon for regular unleaded gas and $4.899 per gallon for premium gas. Those prices were nearly $1 higher than other area gas stations.

After seeing the story, Nessel's office sent a letter to the gas station, ordering them to cease and desist from price gouging.

The owners of the gas station have now agreed to pay the state of Michigan $2,000 -- $1,700 of which will be available as reimbursements to customers who can prove they purchased gas at the station on May 18.

The remaining $300 will be retained by the department for costs associated with investigating the case.

The gas station must pay the fine no later than July 1.

"I am encouraged by this outcome, which offers an opportunity for consumers to be made whole," Nessel said in a press release. "Our consumer protection team will continue to seek action against entities that take advantage of customers."

Those who wish to be reimbursed, customers need to file a complaint, either online through the department's form, or by calling 877-765-8388.
