(WWJ) The first major snow of the season is expected to hit Metro Detroit this weekend and it could affect Thanksgiving holiday travel.

AccuWeather forecaster Joe Lundberg says snow will start Saturday afternoon and continue until Sunday morning.

"You're talking about a 16-18 hour period where it can snow, Lundberg said. "This one could be very impactful as we wrap up the month of November."

Lundberg says total snowfall will measure 2-4 inches in and near Detroit, but 4-8 inches of snow is possible in the northern and western suburbs.

The National Weather Service says there may be some rain near the Michigan-Ohio border at times.

Winter arrived earlier this week in other parts of Michigan. Forecasters say more than 30 inches of snow has fallen in the northwestern part of the Upper Peninsula. People living near Grayling and in Antrim County in northern lower Michigan reported 18-21 inches of snow Wednesday and Thursday.
