DETROIT (WWJ) - Spring has sprung! Unseasonably warm temperatures are expected climb near or into the 80s this week in Metro Detroit to the delight of residents weary of winter.
"Gorgeous the rest of the day," AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said. DeVore added that some clouds will mix in with breezy gusts, some up to 30 mph, but the afternoon high will reach 75°.
While overnight temperatures Tuesday into Wednesday will be mild at the low to mid-50s, tomorrow will be hot.
DeVore said Metro Detroit will come "within a few degrees of 80" with sun and some clouds. Thursday will be similar, but Friday could near or break the record of 81°.
According to AccuWeather meteorologists, the summer-like temperatures will be the highest Michigan has seen since last fall. The highs are expected to be as much as 10-20 F degrees above the historical average for mid-April.
Experts say a large mass of high pressure coming from the southeast U.S. is behind the significant change in temperatures. While some highs tend to creep up into the 70s in April, there hardly is such a long stretch of beautiful weather.
Saturday will be warm as well, but expect it for too much longer. DeVore forecasted that some showers and thunderstorms will move in later in the day and during the overnight hours that will cool down the Metro Detroit area down going into Sunday.
Highs are only expected to reach 58 on April 16, once again reminding us that spring in Detroit can bring plenty of weather surprises, but at least the rest of the week will be bright and sunny.
Some places around the Metro area are ushering in the warm weather by opening up summer activities early.
Officials in Oakland County said the sunny weather has prompted them to open the Dog Dock early over at Orion Oaks County Park.
