(WWJ) -- Election Day in Michigan has come to a close and the results are continuing to pour in Wednesday morning.
The polls were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, with votes cast in mayoral races, city council elections and a variety of proposals across many metro Detroit communities.
WAYNE COUNTY MAYORAL RACES
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was elected to a third term, defeating challenger Anthony Adams.
Duggan, who earned more than 72% of the vote in this summer’s primary mayoral election, was leading by a sizable margin just before 10 p.m., when the Associated Press called the race for the incumbent.
A low voter turnout was expected Tuesday, estimated to be at around 15% of the city’s population, which some political analysts said favored Duggan as the incumbent.
State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud will lead Dearborn after being elected as the city’s seventh mayor, defeating former Wayne County Commissioner Gary Woronchak.
With his win, Hammoud becomes Dearborn’s first Arab American and Muslim mayor. The 31-year-old succeeds Mayor John “Jack” O’Reilly Jr., who was not seeking reelection.
The city of Taylor will also have a new leader. Results show current city councilman Tim Woolley winning over Alex Garza.
Hamtramck has elected its first Arab-American mayor. The unofficial results show Amer Ghalib beating out long-time mayor Karen Majewski.
And in Westland, Mayor Bill Wild has been reelected.
DETROIT CITY COUNCIL
Detroit voters elected several new city council members on Tuesday.
The two city-wide, at-large seats were won by Coleman Young II and Mary Waters, who beat incumbent Janee Ayers.
Ayers’ home and council offices were recently raided as part of an ongoing federal investigation.
District 1 Councilman James Tate retained his seat for a fourth term, while District 2 Councilman Roy McCalister Jr. suffered an upset loss to challenger Angela Calloway.
Newcomers Latisha Johnson in District 4 and Gabriela Santiago-Romero in District 6 were also elected.
OAKLAND COUNTY MAYORAL RACES
Voters across Oakland County elected new mayors and city council members on Tuesday, and also decided on a series of proposals.
Former state lawmaker Tim Griemel will be the new mayor of Pontiac, while Paula Millan won the mayoral race in Clawson.
Incumbent mayors in Oak Park, Farmington Hills and Novi also won their respective races.
And Royal Oak’s mayor will also be staying on the job, as Michael Fournier defeated challenger Tom Roth.
PROPOSALS IN OAKLAND COUNTY
Voters in Royal Oak chose to leave the Veteran’s War Memorial in its current location. The city moved the memorial about 60 feet from its prior location as part of a new downtown park project last May.
Veterans’ groups objected the move, saying the were not consulted on the matter.
Meanwhile, voters in Clawson and Rockwood have rejected proposed ordinances to allow recreational cannabis retailers to set up shop in the cities.
In Lapeer, voters rejected a measure banning recreational marijuana businesses and only allowing medical marijuana provisioning centers.
MACOMB COUNTY RESULTS
New city leaders and a new state Senator were on ballots across Macomb County.
In Sterling Heights, incumbent Michael Taylor was reelected, defeating challenger Ken Nelson.
The only other contested race came in New Baltimore, where Tom Semaan defeated John Dupray.
Republican State Rep. Douglas Wozniak of Shelby Township defeated Democrat Martin Robert Center of Harrison Township in a special election for the 8th District Senate seat.
