(WWJ) — As the 2024 Presidential Election nears, much talk surrounding the race has centered around the age of incumbent Joe Biden, as well as that of former President Donald Trump.

While many are calling for the Democratic Party to turn to a different candidate, especially in the wake of last month’s debate, Michigan U.S. Sen. Gary Peters is among those backing Biden to stay in the race.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Peters said he “absolutely” believes Biden can beat Trump in a rematch election this fall.

“And I believe that we’ll be able to hold the Senate majority and I think we also have a good shot of expanding it,” Peters said.

His remarks came a day after spending time with Biden during a bill signing event for legislation that extends a grant program that allows fire departments to buy equipment, pay for cancer screenings and address staffing needs.

“He was as sharp as ever, and made, I thought, some very good comments prior to the signing. He engaged in some substantive conversations not only with me and some other members of Congress, but with many of the firefighters who were there as well,” Peters said.

Thus far, no members of the Michigan Democratic Party have publicly called for Biden to step out of the race.
