(WWJ) – A suspect is dead and a police officer is recovering following an officer-involved shooting in a small Southwest Michigan community.

Michigan State Police confirmed the shooting happened Monday in Hagar Township, northeast of Benton Harbor in Berrien County.

Police officers from the Coloma Township and Berrien County Sheriff’s Departments were on the scene at the time of the shooting, according to MSP officials, who have been asked to investigate the shooting.

WNDU in South Bend reported police were called to a home on Bundy Road on reports of a “domestic call.” When officers showed up, gunfire broke out between a suspect and three officers, according to the outlet.

The 40-year-old suspect was shot and killed, while a Coloma officer was hit. That officer was said to be listed in stable condition, according to WNDU. The suspect’s name has not been released.

Officials have not released any further information about the incident, including what prompted the “domestic call.”

“Please allow sufficient time for detectives to gather evidence & interview witnesses,” MSP officials said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

Officials were expected to provide more details as updates become available.
