Sheriff: Oakland County kids taken by father found safe in North Carolina

(WWJ) Two Michigan children who were taken from their mother's home in Oakland County on Thursday have been found safe, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said authorities out of state found the children--18-month old Avery and 9-year-old Jaden--at their paternal grandmother's home in North Carolina late Friday night.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says their father, Joshua Breckenridge of Independence Township, had taken Avery and Jaden from their mother's home near Clarkston around 11 a.m. Thursday, as well as her 2003 GMC SUV, without her permission.

Breckenridge is on probation for domestic abuse and wears an electronic tether. He is not supposed to leave the state without a judge's permission, but just as authorities believed, he was enroute to his mother's house on the east coast.

Authorities did not believe the children were in any physical danger, but said they were concerned because Avery has a heart condition that causes seizures. Breckenridge did not take her medication when they left.

The mother and father have lived together in the past, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office says detectives had notified state police in West Virginia and North Carolina, as well as Greenville police, to be on the lookout for Breckenridge and the children to do a welfare check.

The sheriff's office says Breckenridge has taken the kids in the past, but did not elaborate.

Detectives will meet with prosecutors on Monday to expedite Breckenridge's return to Michigan.
