SUMMIT TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – A Michigan State Police trooper is recovering after being dragged by a car during an attempted arrest Sunday morning.
Around 9 a.m. Sunday a trooper from the Jackson Post pulled a vehicle over in Summit Township, just south of Jackson.
During the traffic stop, MSP officials said “an altercation occurred” and the suspect was able to get back in his car as the trooper was trying to arrest him.
The suspect took off speeding with the trooper hanging out of the driver’s side window.
Officials said the trooper was dragged for about ¾ of a mile before falling off. The trooper has been released from the hospital after being treated for minor injuries.
At some point during the incident, the trooper’s body camera apparently fell off or was thrown off by the suspect. Officials said it may have fallen into the suspect’s car, but area residents to look around for the camera.
“If you live in the area of Cooper Street, High Street or Elm Street, if you could check your ring cameras for the incident which involved a maroon Chrysler 300,” MSP officials said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Later, MSP said investigators identified the suspect, who turned himself in after talking with family members. He is being held in the Jackson County Jail on multiple charges.
Authorities did not say what prompted the initial traffic stop.
The suspect's name has not been released, pending an arraignment.
