TECUMSEH, MICH. (WWJ) -- A Michigan woman is riding her bike over 3,000 miles to raise money and awareness about the disease that claimed her mother's life.

Sue Wilson, 64, of Tecumseh, is riding her bicycle 3,100 miles from Silver City, New Mexico to St. Augustine, Florida for Alzheimer's research and to support "The Longest Day" fundraiser -- all in memory of her mother, Helen Gould Parker, who died from it in 2010.

"It's just very, very sad and challenging for the family. It was hard. I think the toughest part was realizing that there wasn't a cure," said Wilson.

Since her mother loved adventure, Wilson said that a cross-country bike ride would be the perfect way to honor her legacy.

Wilson said her mother was a "force of nature" and believes she's tagging along for the adventure, cheering her on.

She originally started her ride in San Francisco, California in 2020, but her journey was cut short because of the pandemic.

Now it's two years later and she's continuing her journey right from where she left off -- in Silver City.

She'll finish the ride on May 4th.
