(WWJ) - Michigan residents making minimum wage should see a boost on their next paycheck.

Taking effect on Jan. 1, 2024, the state’s minimum wage has increase from $10.10 to $10.33 per hour. This increase is thanks to the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2018.

Minors will see an increase to $8.78 per hour and tipped employees hourly pay will rise to $3.93.

The training wage for newly hired employees ages 16 to 19 in their first 90 days will remain at $4.25 per hour.

While there was talk that the raise in pay could be blocked by pending litigation, and while the increase has been debated, nothing blocked the boost from taking effect as scheduled. Under the law as it stands, wages will continue increasing every year through 2030 due to legislation passed that was meant to curb a 2018 voter initiative that would have seen the increases happen over a shorter period of time.

In 2018, One Fair Wage started a petition for voters to decide whether to raise Michigan's minimum wage as well as pay tipped employees equal to non-tipped employees by 2024. The Michigan Legislature amended the legislation to keep the wage difference between tipped and non-tipped employees and increase the amount of time the raises would take place.
