CHARLEVOIX (WWJ) -- One northern Michigan community has been told to Bee-ware of bees -- and lots of them!
A large truck loaded with beehives overturned on Jaquay Road in Charlevoix County's Wilson Township on Wednesday afternoon, and several million honeybees got loose.
Charlevoix County Sheriff Charles Vondra says as many as 50 million honeybees may have been released in the accident.
Police urged residents to keep clear of the area while the scene was cleaned up by local authorities.
As of Wednesday around 5 p.m., the hives had been collected and the swarm of bees was calming down on the roadway.
Officials from the Sheriff’s Office noted that the bees would be safely collected later in the evening.
Jaquay Road was reopened to traffic, but drivers were advised to keep their windows up while traveling through the area.
Local residents were also being told to keep doors and windows to their homes closed.
