PORT HURON (WWJ) - A 14-year-old girl who was reported missing by her foster family almost a year ago was found hiding in the closet of a Port Huron home on Tuesday, officials announced.
The girl was located by a U.S. Marshals fugitive team and transferred into the care of Child Protective Services. She was taken to the hospital where authorities learned she was pregnant.
“She was crying,” Deputy U.S. Marshal Robert Watson told the Detroit Free Press. “She didn’t know where she was going to go. She was pretty terrified. And she was afraid of losing her baby."
Watson said officials are going to seek parental kidnapping charges against the girl's biological mother, who had lost custody of her daughter previously.
Authorities believe the girl initially ran away and was found by her mother, who moved her daughter from home to home to keep her from being discovered by others.
The teen has since been reunited with her biological father, officials added.
The search of the missing girl came to a head on Tuesday after state police contacted Watson for help. Information called into police led authorities to the home in Port Huron.
Watson said the occupants of the home refused the Marshals entry. They also refused to talk to authorities or give out any information.
“We ended up having to serve a search warrant to get inside," Watson added.
