HAZEL PARK (WWJ) - A young boy who wandered away from home overnight has been found safe and reunited with his family in Hazel Park.
The Hazel Park Police Department told WWJ's Charlie Langton that the boy, aged 2 to 3-years-old, wandered away from his house, in the area of Hayes Street near 8 Mile Rd. and Dequindre, while his mother was asleep at around 12 a.m. Thursday.
"Police say it just happened," Langton reported, early in the morning.
The child was not completely alone, however, as he was accompanied by the family dog, described as a black labradoodle.
The child's mother told WWJ Newsradio 950 that she was asleep in the middle of the night when her son got up, went outside, walked across the street and knocked on a neighbor's door.
The neighbor brought the child and the dog inside, and immediately called the police.
When police shared the boy's photo on Facebook, the mom was awakened by a call from her son's childcare provider, who saw the post.
The boy, along with his dog, was reunited with his mother, and all is well.
The department said the incident was a "fluke" and no charges will be filed.
The latest incident of a child wandering away from home comes days after the search for a missing 2-year-old Autistic boy in Mid-Michigan ended in tragedy.
The child, identified in reports out of Lansing as Jermaine Jones, was reported missing around 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9 after officials say he left the house while his babysitter was in the shower.
Frantic efforts to locate him persisted into the overnight hours and well into the next day, but authorities announced late Tuesday afternoon that the boy's body was found in the Looking Glass River around 4 p.m.
