(WWJ) -- If you’re looking to get a little extra excitement out of your next stay on Mackinac Island, there’s one hotel you may want to consider.
Mission Point Resort has gained a reputation over the decades as being one of the island’s most haunted locations, and there’s one specific spirit that has seemingly become a permanent fixture at the hotel.
In a recent episode of The Daily J podcast, "Haunts of Mackinac" author and founder Todd Clements told WWJ’s Zach Clark and Annie Scaramuzzino that many guests at Mission Point have had encounters with a rather rambunctious spirit known as “Harvey.”
The story goes that Harvey -- whose real name has been kept private by his family -- was once a student at the short-lived Mackinac College, which operated on the island from 1966 through 1970.
Harvey is said to have been in love with a fellow student, but things took a tragic turn. He went missing one winter, and his body was found in the woods the following spring, dead of an apparent suicide.
However, Clements says that there have been some disagreement about the way in which Harvey actually met his demise.
After reviewing the police report, Clements and his team believe that the former student could have actually been the victim of murder, possibly at the hands of a jealous boyfriend who was dating the object of Harvey's affections.
A perpetual flirt and prankster, Harvey is known to creep through the Mission Point Resort rooms, get into bed with guests and jump on mattresses.
He also is said to frequent Mission Point’s highly-haunted theater, poking and pinching female guests and making himself known through other antics meant to elicit laughs.
Todd Clements believes that he first saw Harvey on Mackinac Island’s bluffs when he was 12-years-old; a moment that was a launching point for Clements' lifelong love of the paranormal.
He believes he has had numerous encounters with Harvey since, even in the middle of Haunts of Mackinac ghost tours.
