(WWJ) A conservative congressman from Macomb County has announced he is leaving the Republican party over the refusal of President Donald Trump to accept the results of the November election.

In a two-page, often scathing public letter Rep. Paul Mitchell, who represents Shelby Township in Michigan's 10th congressional district, said that in politics, "a person must be able to accept winning and losing with grace and maturity."

Mitchell said while there were some "disconcerting aspects" to the election, the president has been unable to prove rampant wrongdoing.

He went on to write: "With more than 155 million people voting, both administrative errors and even some fraudulent voting likely occurred. Steps must be taken, by each state, to audit election results, validate ballots and process and report findings to ensure that every legal vote counts. Michigan clearly needs to do that, not just Wayne County. However, the president and his legal team have failed to provide substantive evidence of fraud or administrative failure on a scale large enough to impact the outcome of the election."

He added, "It is unacceptable for political candidates to treat our election as though we were a third world nation and incite distrust of something so basic as the sanctity of our vote."

Mitchell request that the clerk of the House change his party affiliation to "independent."

This comes as the election's results are now official in Michigan. On Monday, the state's Electoral College delegates unanimously cast their 16 votes for President-elect Joe Biden, and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris.
