MONROE COUNTY (WWJ) If you get a call from Sergeant Moody or Brian Quinn, use cation and hang up.
That’s the advice of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office as they warn of a phone scam targeting residents.
They said, on Saturday December 14th, they received multiple reports from residents who said they’d been fielding calls from people who purported to be law enforcement. The scammers use the name Sergeant Moody or Brian Quinn; they then say the victim has warrants out for their arrest, has failed to appear for jury duty or has missed appearing in court.
The scammer scares the victim into believing they be immediately arrested without complying and demands payment via various platforms, including Venmo and Zelle. In past scams, the scammers have also attempted to collect payment via gift cards.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said to keep the following in mind when receiving suspicious phone calls:
-Take time to stop and think. Scammers attempt to sound urgent to pressure you.
-Call someone you trust or police for an opinion about the call.
-Do not send any money, gift cards or wire transfer. Government entities never require or request payment over the phone.
Sheriff Troy Goodnough said no law enforcement agency will ever call residents and demand money or face arrest—for any reason. If you have been contacted by scammers and live within Monroe County, please report it to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at (734) 243-7070. If you live outside Monroe County, contact your local law enforcement agency.
