MONROE (WWJ) A Monroe man died in a rollover crash after driving into a ditch and striking a utility pole.

In a statement, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Zachary Zalenski, 32, was killed in the crash in Exeter Township, about 10 miles north of Monroe. It happened on Saturday (8/31) around 10:37 p.m. at S. Stony Creek Rd., southeast of Sumpter Road.

Investigators said he was driving his maroon 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer northwest on S. Stony Creek Rd. While in motion, he crossed the centerline and entered into the southeast traffic lane. Zalenski tried to regain control of the car by leaving the roadway to the west. He "overcorrected" and drove into a ditch line, the sheriff’s office said.

The car overturned and struck a utility pole, coming to rest on its roof.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The airbags did not deploy, and Zalenski was not wearing his seatbelt, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said “careless driving” is a factor in the crash. It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at (734) 240-7541.
