ONEIDA TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A mother and her two children died in a crash with semi-truck in Central Michigan.
The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office said it happened on Thursday (9/26) around 8 p.m. in the area of Mt. Hope Highway and Cochran Road—in Oneida Township, about 13 miles west of Lansing.
In a statement on Facebook; the sheriff’s office said her van was traveling westbound when she did not stop at a stop sign and entered the intersection. A northbound semi-truck and trailer hit them.
The driver and her “two young children” died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
A third child and the semi-truck driver were both rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened in a residential, rural area surrounded by farmland.
The Eaton County Sheriff's Office Accident Investigation Team is “actively investigating” the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
The Lake Odessa Fire Department said, in a statement on their Facebook page, the victims were the wife of their 'Brother In Service' and two of their daughters.
"It is with broken hearts we extend our deepest heartfelt condolences, to our Brother in Service, on the loss of his beloved Wife and 2 young children...." they wrote.
While the fire department did not directly mention the crash, multiple news sources including WOOD-TV listed the crash as the cause of death for the wife and two daughters of a Lake Odessa volunteer firefighter.
A Meal Train has been set up to help the father and surviving daughter. All meals will be delivered to the Lake Odessa Fire Department out of respect for the family's privacy, the page said. You can sign up for the Meal Train here, or donate here.
