HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) — Michigan State Police investigators are looking into what is being described as a “suspicious death” in Highland Park.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said the Special Investigations Section received a call from Highland Park police about an unidentified man who was found dead in the basement of a home on Geneva Street, in the area of Woodward and McNichols.

The house appears to have caught fire “some time ago” and is now abandoned, according to Shaw.

The man was found in the basement and authorities are not sure how he died. While authorities are unsure if it was a homicide, overdose, caused by weather or a natural death, Shaw said it is being investigated as a homicide.

He noted investigators have found some evidence in the basement that suggests it may have been a homicide or that foul play may have been involved.

Detectives were walking through the neighborhood searching for video evidence or possible witnesses, Shaw said. A fingerprint scanner and evidence technicians were on the way to the scene, as of 6: 15 p.m.

Shaw said residents in the area can expect a heavy police presence for at least several hours.

Officials have not released any information about the victim, including a possible age range.

Anyone who may know something about the man’s death is asked to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-SPEAK-UP or to MSP by calling 855-MICH-TIP.
