EATON COUNTY (WWJ) – A man is behind bars, thanks to the eye of a watchful citizen and the help of a Michigan State Police K9.
The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office says early Tuesday morning while most people were headed to work, a “very observant citizen” noticed someone trying to steal items from a vehicle.
That person called 911 and sheriff’s deputies were quick to respond to the scene in Eaton County, just southwest of Lansing.
But the suspect already had a head start and had fled into a nearby field. That’s why they called in the MSP K9 to help track the suspect down.
After nearly two hours, Trooper Morrow and his canine partner, Milo, found the suspect hiding in a field.
The sheriff’s office says the suspect still tried to run, but he “did not make it very far,” as he was taken down with some help from Milo.
Officials shared pictures from Tuesday’s scene, showing Milo proudly posing and the suspect covered in grass in the back of a police car.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested and held at the Eaton County Jail.
While authorities have not said what charges the suspect is expected to face, troopers did recover several items he allegedly stole. It was not clear where exactly the alleged theft and hideout happened.
“This would not have been possible if it were not for the observant citizen, Eaton County 911, and the assistance from our Law Enforcement partner, MSP K9.” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.
