MSP searching for murder, sexual assault suspect near Mt. Pleasant

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (WWJ) -- The search is on for a man who Michigan State Police is wanted in connection with a sexual assault and homicide near Mt. Pleasant early Sunday morning.

Investigators from the Mt. Pleasant State Police Post were called to a residence on South Isabella Road in Union Township -- east of Central Michigan University -- around 3:15 a.m. Sunday for an alleged sexual assault and homicide investigation.

Police have not disclosed details about the victim or the crime, but have identified 40-year-old Gary Gardenhire, also known as “Zeke.”

Investigators have been actively searching for Gardenhire since Sunday morning and say he is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Though state police initially said Sunday they did not believe there was any immediate danger to the public, authorities tweeted Monday afternoon that Gardenhire is believed to still be in Mt. Pleasant and residents should lock their doors and call 911 if they see him.

Gardenhire is described as a 40-year-old black male, approximately 6-foot-1, 180 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes.
