(WWJ) A man is hospitalized after he ejected from his car after crashing off just I-94 in Detroit.

It happened at around 2:30 a.m. Monday, near Chalmers.

Michigan State Police say the driver was speeding when he exited the freeway on the ramp and lost control on the Service Drive at Eastlawn.

The vehicle rolled over several times and the man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car.

He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

While MSP said it is believed that speed was a factor in the crash, it's unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs may have played a role.

The eastbound I-94 exit ramp to Chalmers was closed temporarily for the on-scene investigation, but has since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
