BRUCE TWP. (WWJ) - The preliminary investigation into a trooper-involved shooting in Macomb County Sunday afternoon has revealed new details about the events leading up to the incident.

The trooper heard over the radio to be on the lookout for a Jeep SUV “involved in an alleged felonious assault” in Shelby Township.

A Jeep SUV drove off Van Dyke to the right side of the road into a corn field in front of the trooper, who then pulled up next to the vehicle.

The driver, a 31-year-old Chesterfield resident, reportedly got out of the vehicle with a “long gun,” according to an update from MSP Second District.

The trooper fired and struck the suspect in the leg. They were transported to a local hospital.

The trooper wasn’t hurt. They were placed on administrative leave per departmental policy.

“Currently there is a lot of on scene work to do,” F/Lt. Mike Shaw said. “Detectives from the Third District IRT are processing the scene with our forensic laboratory, writing search warrants and our drone team is mapping the scene. The investigation pends interviews with the suspect as well as review of body and vehicle cameras and any other evidence from the area.”

An investigators report will be sent to the Attorney General’s Office once the investigation is concluded.
