DELTA TWP. (WWJ) – An investigation is underway near Lansing after a train struck a car in the aftermath of a crash on Monday afternoon.

Michigan State Police say it all unfolded shortly before 2 p.m. Monday when a trooper was investigating a two-car crash on Mt. Hope Highway in Delta Township – just west of Lansing.

A preliminary investigation showed a vehicle was at the intersection of Mt. Hope and Lansing Road when another vehicle that was traveling too fast attempted to turn, lost control and smashed head-on into the vehicle.

The car that was hit was pushed back partially onto the railroad tracks, MSP officials said.

Everyone involved in that incident had exited their vehicles safely and railroad authorities were notified of the crash.

A short time later, according to MSP, a train was unable to stop and struck the unoccupied car on the tracks.

Some people involved were taken to the hospital for minor injuries from the original car crash, but it did not appear anyone was injured in the train collision.

Railroad authorities were on-scene Monday afternoon investigating.

MSP expected the stretch of tracks on Mt. Hope near Lansing to remain closed for several hours while railroad authorities conducted their investigation.
