(WWJ) The Michigan State Police are teaming up with the Indiana State Police, Ontario Provincial Police and local law enforcement for a distracted driving campaign this week.
The Lake to Lake, Focused and Safe initiative will run from noon until 5 Wednesday afternoon. Extra patrols will be out along the I-94 corridor starting in Indiana, across Michigan to Port Huron and extending along Highway 401 from the Ambassador Bridge to Toronto.
Police have seen all kinds of distracted driving, including a person using their knees to drive while they put cream cheese on a bagel.
"Anything from people eating, to actually seeing someone who put Velcro on their steering wheel so they can put hook up their iPad so they could watch movies while they're driving," said Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw. He adds, "94 is one of our biggest corridors across the state of Michigan, so we decided we were going to concentrate on that area first."
The Michigan State Police are hoping to reduce distracted driving crashes significantly by 2030.
