(WWJ) An investigation is underway in Mid-Michigan, where a man was fatally shot by a State Police trooper over the weekend.
The incident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. Saturday, in Shiawassee County's Bennington Township, about 87 miles northwest of Detroit.
According to police, the trooper was called to Brewer Rd. near Morrice Rd. on a report of a person walking who was "acting unusual."
When the trooper approached the 37-year-old man he became combative, MSP said, and the trooper deployed a taser, which was ineffective.
That's when it's alleged that the man pulled out a gun and fired at the trooper.
"The trooper attempted to separate the subject from the weapon, but the subject was able to again aim the weapon at the trooper," police said.
The trooper then returned fire, fatally wounding the man, identified as Randy Lee Jenkins, 37-year-old-male from Owosso.
MSP said the trooper, who was not injured, has been placed on administrative while the shooting is investigated.
Once complete, the investigation will be forwarded to the Shiawassee County Prosecutor's Office for review.
No names have been released.
