HANOVER TWP. (WWJ) - An adult and two children were injured after the buggy they were traveling in was hit by a vehicle.
At 6 p.m. on March 17, Michigan State Police troopers were called to the area of Moscow and Hatch Roads in Hanover Township for a crash involving a Ford Escape and a horse and buggy. The buggy had nine passengers. Hanover Twp. is southwest of Jackson.
An investigation revealed that the driver of the Escape, a 16-year-old Jackson teen, was driving south on Moscow Road when she came up to the horse and buggy, which was also traveling south. The driver was unable to stop in time and hit the buggy from behind, according to a Tweet from the MSP First District.
The driver had minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A 32-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the buggy, suffered a hip injury. A 10-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries, the statement said. All three were taken to a local hospital.
The operator of the buggy, a 32-year-old man, along with the other passengers, who ranged in age from 2 to 7 years old, weren't injured. All of the occupants of the buggy are from Hanover.
Authorities said they do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. The driver of the Escape was issued a citation for unable to stop in an assured clear distance.
