MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - The long-awaited murder trial for a 28-year-old man accused of brutally murdering a 4-year-old child met in court on Tuesday for opening remarks.
Jonathon Jones from Roseville was charged with first degree murder after police allege he beat his girlfriend's four-year-old daughter so savagely that she later died as a result of her abuse in May 2017.
Authorities allege that Jones beat the victim, Ivy Yurkus, until she was unresponsive when the girl's mother left for work -- Yurkus died the next morning at a local hospital due to her injuries according to the Detroit Free Press.
The jury was told by a Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor that Jones was responsible for Yurkus' death. The prosecution said it planned to present photos taken by the medical examiner after the little girl's death which clearly show her body covered in bruises.
Jones' defense attorney claims the Macomb County Police mishandled the investigation against his client and the case has been built on circumstantial evidence and speculation.
The trial is expected to last two to three weeks.
