Person in custody after baby's death in Grand Rapids ruled 'suspicious'

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WWJ) – A person is in custody after authorities deemed a baby boy’s death in Grand Rapids “suspicious.”

Grand Rapids police say officers and members of the city’s fire department responded to a call on Weston Street SW around 9 a.m. Saturday on the report of a 1-year-old baby that wasn’t breathing.

First responders gave the child emergency medical attention and took him to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say forensic technicians and child protective services were called in to investigate, due to the nature of the incident.

During the investigation, authorities determined the death was suspicious and the case is now being handled as a criminal investigation.

Police say a person of interest is in custody, but did not provide any further details about that person or the incident that led to the baby’s death.

A cause of death will be determined following an autopsy by the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Any potential criminal charges would ultimately be determined by the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office.
