DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Police are trying to figure out what led to the shooting death of a popular 53-year-old neurosurgeon whose body was found inside his home on Sunday.
The Detroit Police Department told WWJ that they discovered the body after being called out to the home in the 100 block of W. Boston Blvd., near Woodward Avenue in the city's Boston Edison Historic District, for a well check.
Upon arrival, officers were able to get inside the home and discovered a deceased 53-year-old male with gunshots wounds.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown at this time.
Police are not naming the victim as they continue to investigate, but Ascension Hospital in Detroit released a statement about the incident, identifying Dr. Devon Hoover as the deceased.
"Devon Hoover, MD, was a dedicated and well respected member of the Ascension Michigan family and will be greatly missed by out community," a spokesperson said of his death. "Our sincerest condolence and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends and fellow associated during this incredibly difficult time."
According to his profile through Ascension Michigan, Hoover was a board-certified neurosurgeon that had a special interest in neck and back disorders.
He obtained his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine before coming to Detroit and completing his residency at Henry Ford Hospital. He received fellowship training at Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Children's Hospital of Michigan.
The investigation, still in its early stages, remains ongoing at this time. No other information has been released.
