(WWJ) -- A new bill aimed at reducing drunk driving has passed in the Michigan Senate.

Under the legislation, individuals convicted of driving while intoxicated may be required to have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle.

The handheld breathalyzer requires the driver to test negative for alcohol consumption before they are able to start their vehicle.

The bill would allow judges in Michigan’s drug treatment, mental health and veterans treatment courts to order ignition interlock device when appropriate.

Supports say the device is more effective than license suspensions following a drunk driving conviction.

The legislation will now head to the Michigan House of Representatives for consideration.
