DETROIT (WWJ) – More information has been released on two Detroit police officers who were arrested for separate incidents over the weekend.
On Monday Detroit Police Chief James White announced two officers – a five-year veteran of the department and a corporal with more than 25 years on the force – had been relieved of their duties after being arraigned on felony charges.
The officer, identified as David Apperson, was arrested last Thursday and is on house arrest after allegedly sexually assaulting his wife, according to a report from The Detroit News.
Apperson, an officer in the Detroit Police Department's 3rd Precinct, was arraigned Monday on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, which carries a sentence of up to life in prison, according to the report.
Apperson allegedly sexually assaulted his wife at their home, then went to work, Woodhaven police officials said, according to the report.
Apperson was given a $100,000 bond and ordered to be placed on a GPS tether and house arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court next week.
During a press conference announcing the arrests Monday, White said he couldn't offer many details on the alleged sexual assault and it was "very difficult to discuss because of the victim involved," but he did not elaborate. The victim was not a minor and the chief said there are no other victims and it is not "a predator situation," meaning the community is not at risk for similar incidents involving the officer.
In the incident involving the other officer, Madison Heights police officials on Tuesday announced Amy Szarafinski, 53, was arrested around 8 p.m. Saturday after a road rage incident in the area of northbound I-75 and 12 Mile Road.
She allegedly pointed a gun at another driver during the incident. Officials have not released any other details surrounding the incident.
White said Monday the corporal had "likely" used her department-issued weapon, though investigators had not determined what weapon was allegedly used in the incident.
The corporal was charged with one count of felonious assault, a four-year felony, and one count of brandishing a firearm, a 93-day misdemeanor, according to Madison Heights police. She was given a $25,000 personal bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Aug. 9.
Madison Heights police officials are asking for anyone who knows something about the alleged road rage incident to call Detective Sgt. Hartunian at 248-837-2737 or the Madison Heights Police Department at 248-585-2100.
White is reportedly going to ask the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners on Thursday to suspend Szarifinski without pay.
