DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- A Dearborn Heights woman has been charged with murder after the boyfriend she allegedly shot in their home two weeks ago died of his injuries.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Wednesday announced that 30-year-old Leah Renee Johnson is now facing two counts — Second-Degree Murder and Felony Firearm — in connection with the fatal shooting of Nicholas Stevens.

At around 2:30 a.m. on May 1, Dearborn Heights police officers responded to a home on Colgate Street, where the couple lived together, on a report of shots fired.

The victim was found in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the neck. He was taken by EMS to a hospital where he later died on May 5, officials said.

According to prosecutors, an investigation found that Johnson and Stevens got into an argument that escalated, leading to Johnson allegedly grabbing a gun and shooting her boyfriend.

Johnson was initially charged with Assault with Intent to Murder and Felony Firearm, but the charges were amended after Stevens' death.

Johnson was arraigned on the new charges in 20th District Court on Wednesday, and was remanded to jail. She will be back in court with a Probable Cause Conference on July 12.
