A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday, January 21st, for the new Barbara Ann Karmanos Center satellite treatment office (18800 Hubbard), in the area of Southfield and Ford roads, that will focus on outpatient care and breast health services.
Patients can now schedule appointments at the center.
“Cancer is increasingly an outpatient business,” Brian Gamble, president of Karmanos Cancer Hospital and Cancer Network, told WWJ’s Jon Hewett. “So it’s very important we spread ourselves out and provide services in the community, where our patients live for their convenience."
Karmanos Cancer Institute Dearborn, a subsidiary of McLaren Health Care, is Karmanos' 17th satellite treatment center statewide.
The 5,000 square-foot center—located on the first floor of the building— will help patients with a wide variety of cancers including breast, gynecologic, head and neck, lung, colorectal, genitourinary and more.
“With the opening of our new ambulatory clinic in Dearborn, we are able to bring the specialized services and patient care of a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center to the residents of Dearborn, Dearborn Heights and surrounding areas,” Gamble said. “What sets us apart is our cancer-only focus, and access to world class specialists and clinical trials.”
Other features of the facility include:
-Eight infusion bays, including a negative pressure room to isolate patients who have a suspected or confirmed airborne infection
-A clinic area with six exam rooms
-A compounding pharmacy, allowing the pharmacy to to mix the medications required for each patient receiving chemotherapy and infusion on the day of their treatment
-Lab services via a lab draw station
-A consult room
-An imaging services in the women’s corridor including: a 3-D mammography unit for diagnostics and breast screenings (staffed by only female doctors, nurses and technicians), an ultrasound space for breast ultrasound, and a women’s private dressing and waiting area
Patients will only have to drive a short distance to the main Karmanos hospital in midtown Detroit for advanced services including: surgeries, bone marrow and stem cell transplants, CAR-T cell therapy and more.
“Our goal is to get to as many patients as we can and give them the highest quality care we're able to offer...access to new trials, access to new therapies, access to new technologies,” Gamble said.
Hewett reports that Karmanos doctors diagnose about 14,000 new cases of cancer statewide every year, and treat about 30% of Michigan residents who are facing the disease.
