(WWJ) -- It was a historic finish as a new record was set in the Bayview Mackinac sailboat race this year!

The winning crew was aboard the OC 86 — formally known as Windquest — which is part of New York's Oakcliff Sailing Center.

The 86-foot Max Z sailboat finished the Shore Course for the Bayview Mackinac Race, which stretches from Port Huron to Mackinac Island, in just 17 hours and eleven minutes. That shattered the old record of 19-hours set by Il Mostro in 2013.

"A lot of people think that it was more amazing to set the record because we sailed with children," said Dawn Riley, Oakcliff Sailing's executive director (via The Times Herald). "But that is what Oakcliff does, takes hungry, talented athletes and train them to the top of the sport."

Greg Thomas, the 2021 chairman of the race, says there were perfect conditions this year, with fresh breezes and small waves.

This year marked the 97th consecutive year for the Bayview Mackinac Race, and included around 180 competing teams.
