(WWJ) – Nicolas Gilbert, the son of Detroit businessman Dan Gilbert, has died at the age of 26.

“Nick” Gilbert died Saturday after battling neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow all over the body.

Gilbert “died peacefully at home surrounded by family,” according to a funeral announcement from Ira Kaufman Chapel.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 9 at 1 p.m. at the Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township.

Dan Gilbert is the founder and chairman of Detroit-based Rocket Companies and owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

Nick Gilbert graduated from Michigan State University in 2020. To many NBA fans, he was known as a “good luck charm” for the Cavaliers, as he attended the NBA Draft Lottery multiple times, seeing the franchise earn the No. 1 pick twice.

Neurofibromatosis (NF1), also known as the von Recklinghausen disease, has no known cure and has a number of symptoms that can change throughout the lifespan of someone diagnosed with the disease.

His family started a nonprofit, NF Forward, dedicated to researching the disease. More information on NF1 and the efforts to find a cure can be found on the NF Forward website.
