Oakland Co. Prosecutor said bail denied for man accused of having 11-hour standoff with police
(WWJ) - The Oakland County Prosecutor said bail was denied for a man who allegedly had an 11-hour standoff with police.
The Oakland County Prosecutor's office announced that on Dec. 20, Dean Michael Tyler was denied bond during his arraignment. 35-year-old Tyler, of Sterling Heights, is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder by strangulation and assaulting/resisting/obstructing - police officer.
The charges are related to an incident that occurred in Commerce Township on Dec. 16. Police were called at approximately 11 p.m. for a report of domestic assault. Tyler allegedly barricaded himself inside the residence when officers arrived, authorities said.
An 11-hour standoff ended when Tyler surrendered and was taken into custody. A SWAT team was called in because of the belief that the suspect could be armed. A SWAT negotiator was used to attempt to end the standoff. A robot was also deployed so officers could see inside the home, providing video of the suspect with what appeared to be a gun in his hand, authorities said.
"This incident was a dangerous situation that could have easily escalated and had a much different outcome," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement. "The defendant's actions endangered the victim and disrupted the community's sense of safety. Fleeing or resisting law enforcement is a crime and those who engage in such behaviors will be held responsible."
A probable cause conference is set for Jan. 1 and a preliminary exam is scheduled for Jan. 10. Both will occur before Judge David Law.
Tyler is being held in the Oakland County Jail.
Assault with intent to do great bodily harm by strangulation is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000. It also requires a DNA sample to be taken upon arrest. Assaulting/resisting/obstructing - police officer is a felony punishable by up to two years in prison and up to a $2,000 fine, authorities said.
