ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- There will not be a designated section for smoking weed at this year's Arts, Beats and Eats festival after a vote from the Royal Oak City Commission.

At the Commission meeting Monday night, one of the issues discussed was whether or not to allow the organizers of the downtown Royal Oak festival to have an area for pot sales and smoking.

The proposal, outlined by the producer of the 4-day event, Jon Witz, called for an alley near 6th Street and Washington Avenue surrounded by fencing to obscure street-level views of the cannabis section.

Private security workers would have also been stationed at the entrance and exit, allowing only adults 21 or older inside.

The motion ultimately failed, following a recommendation by the city's police chief to reject pot at the event.
