NORMAN TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – A Northern Michigan man is behind bars after allegedly holding two women hostage Saturday morning, a situation sparked by allegations of stolen meth.
Michigan State Police were called to the scene in Norman Township – between Manistee and Cadillac – shortly after 7 a.m.Saturday, where a woman told troopers she and a friend were visiting the suspect, a 50-year-old man from nearby Wellston.
The suspect, who lived in a shed on Lily Road, accused the women of stealing his meth, MSP officials said.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, pulled out a handgun and told the women they weren’t free to leave, according to MSP.
One of the women called her son, who came to the scene. The son confronted the suspect and was able to get his mother away, but the suspect then slammed the shed door with the other woman inside.
The MSP Emergency Support Team (EST) was called to the scene and later discovered the suspect and victim had left the shed on foot. They were located some distance away by deputies from the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect was no longer in possession of the handgun.
An MSP K9 Team was called to the scene and located the handgun near the shed. The handgun was reported as being stolen in 2010 by the Lansing Police Department.
The suspect is being held in the Manistee County Jail.
Troopers were assisted by deputies from the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Public Safety, MMR EMS, and Norman Township Fire Department.
